Admiral Blames Compensation Claims but is Against Referral Fee Ban? [25th Aug 2011]
Admiral insurance have suffered a 12% drop in share prices which has been blamed on the rise in compensation claims relating to car accidents. However a growth in referral fees for these compensation claims have been singled out as a growth area for the company by industry analysts. Admiral have suggested that they would like to see a cap on legal fees - going against the ban on referral fees suggested by the Association of British Insurers. East Riding councillors are calling for compensation from the the local water company for victims of a flash flood which occurred earlier this month. More than 50 homes were affected by the floods which Yorkshire Water have blamed on the failure of a pumping station. The councillors have suggested in letter to the company that they should help those families who did not have insurance. Yorkshire Water have stated that the drainage system in the area is complex and they want the time to investigate what happened along with other agencies, before they consider the issue of compensation. A greenkeeper from a golf club in Warwick has received personal injury compensation after his finger was amputated in an accident while at work. The man had been trying to free a golf ball from a ball washing machine. He was able to gain access to the inner parts of the machine without tools and suffered a partial amputation of his left index finger and damage to his middle and ring fingers when the machine started up unexpectedly. Warwick Council conducted an investigation and admitted liability for failing to provide a guard which could not be bypassed and not providing information on how to use the machine. They were fined £13,500 and paid the greenkeeper £5,000 in compensation. A delegation of victims of the Irish troubles have stated they will visit Libya once order is restored and will put forward a claim for compensation for the harm caused to UK citizens due to IRA terrorism. It has been found that the Gaddafi regime supported the IRA . The chairman of the Libyan National Transitional Council has already agreed to settle the claim put forward by 147 victims and an amount of £2.13 billion has been discussed. The chairman suggests that an additional fund will also be set up to recognise the pain and suffering of the victims both in the UK and elsewhere. The victims group, known as FAIR could include Michelle Williamson who lost her parents in the Shankhill bombing of 1993. Two sisters who suffered 130 bites to their bodies by bedbugs at a London hotel have received £1,600 in compensation in an out of court settlement. It was discovered that the room the sisters shared had been known to have an infestation and they spent three nights in total at the Airways Hotel which is two-stars. They were forced to visit the doctor and had to take time off work to recover from the bites which took four months to heal. The hotel management have said that what happened to the women was unfortunate, however they cannot trace where the infestation came from. This happening 18 months ago, the spokesperson said. He pointed out that this can happen in any hotel, even five-star ones. The hotel now has a full time contract with a pest control company who come immediately to sort out any issues they have. A Prestwich couple are having to sell their home after a neighbour used no win no fee lawyers to gain £20,000 in damages after a minor accident outside their home. Foroozan Panahandeh says she was hit by a piece of plastic guttering which fell onto her as she put out her bins. She made a claim for negligence from her neighbours and suggested that she suffered moderate to severe pain even after three years. She says she could no longer knit and could not participate in her favourite sports. While the entire claim including costs came to more than £20,000, the victim will receive around £3,000, with the remainder going to her legal team. The neighbours have offered to pay the money in instalments but this has been refused. |
