North West of England are No.1 for Injury Compensation and Claims Companies? [24th Oct 2011]
It has been revealed that the North West of England is the number one place when it comes to insurance claims which involved bodily injury compensation claims. The research conducted by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries revealed that 43% of claims of this nature came from this region, while the North East of Scotland scored just 13%. In addition, the areas where most claims were made happened to match those areas where there is a high concentration of claims management companies. It has been pointed out by the report that Scotland has tighter controls on referral fees and lower numbers of claims management companies - reflecting the lower number of claims. David Brown from the research company has pointed out that the regional differences are stark. He says that those with legitimate claims should be able to get what they deserve. However it is a big money industry which is making huge profits. It is hoped that the banning of referral fees will lead to a drop in the number of claims. A Metropolitan police review has come to the conclusion that the compensation bill for the riots which took place in the summer is likely to be much higher than expected. In fact in London alone the amount claimed has already reached £300 million. A report from the Met has suggested that the original nationwide claims cost estimate of £133 million was inadequate. In London alone more than 3,800 claims have been lodged and it is hoped that the Met will be able to get all costs back from the Home Office. The Met has also said that they reject claims that they allowed some of the damage and looting to take place, although they do admit that they were understaffed at first. The Daily Mail has again released another round-up of compensation payments made by councils to employees in the last five years. In fact, the full amount paid over the last five years was £75 million across 7,500 claims in total. One case involved a Lancashire County Council worker who received £5,500 after he hurt his back after falling out of bed. The reason he fell was because he needed to answer a telephone call from work. Another case featured an obese worker who broke a council toilet and was injured when it collapsed. He received £1,750. Other staff members received payments for being trapped in a lift, having dust blown into their eyes and for dog bites. The largest payments went to workers with legitimate claims such as asbestos related illnesses and those involving negligence. The Taxpayers Alliance has spoken out regarding these compensation payments and has described them as outrageous. |
