UK Man gets Six Figure Payout from G8 Protest in Italy [13th Feb 2012]
A UK man is expected to get a six figure compensation payment after he was mistreated by police in Italy during a G8 protest. The event occurred 11 years ago in Genoa where the police were found to have beaten peaceful demonstrators in a school building. Mark Covell was one of the 93 demonstrators who were preparing to sleep in the building. 300 police officers savagely beat them and later claimed they had been looking for violent protesters from earlier in the day. Mr Covell suffered broken ribs, a broken hand, a shredded lung, spinal damage, broken teeth and internal bleeding. He is expected to receive around 300,000 Euros along with other protesters who are also claiming. 25 police officers were convicted following the attack, but many are still in their posts. Mr Covell has said he will use the money to emigrate to New Zealand. A Libyan military leader is asking for compensation after he claimed that MI6 agents were complicit in his torture. Over the last few months, since the uprising, Abdul Hakim Belhaj has been staying in a hotel where he has run up a bill of £1.5 million. He has been staying in the presidential apartments in a hotel in Libya's capital. He has since been removed, but not after running up the huge bill which has not been paid. He was arrested in 2004 by the CIA after they were tipped off by MI6. He says that following this arrest he was tortured in a Libyan jail for being part of the opposition to the government. He feels that the torture was carried out with the full knowledge of British Intelligence. A former miner from Nottinghamshire has been awarded a compensation payment of £70,000 after he developed an asbestos related cancer. Dennis Ball has said that the cancer has had a devastating effect on his life. The 92 year-old has been living in a nursing home for the last year despite being independent until his illness. Mr Ball worked at the Sutton and Moor Green Collierys for more than 20 years where it was admitted he was exposed to asbestos. His lawyers have pointed out that the judgement allows other people of advanced age to claim compensation. It shows that cancer can have a serious effect on people even when they are in old age. The National Farmers Union (NFU) has claimed that the government is failing to give farmers enough information about how they will be affected if the HS2 rail line goes ahead. The union has called a meeting to talk to farmers about what compensation they could be entitled to if the line runs through their land. Some farmers are against the train line which in some cases will cut farms in half. The farmers have been told that they will receive £1,000 which was negotiated with the Union and the Country Land and Business Association. This initial payment will be to pay for survey work and will come from the government. Alison Munro from the HS2 planning company has commented that they want to develop close working partnerships with the farmers affected and that this payment is a good step in that direction. |
