Hairdresser's Claim Backfires [16th Jul 2012]
An employment tribunal case has been branded as a shameful waste of money by the judge after it had to be adjourned due to a lack of evidence. Jade Wragg had brought the case against her employer because she claimed unfair dismissal and disability discrimination. She had been employed by the HCUK Hair Salon but was made redundant and claimed unfair dismissal as she felt it was related to the fact that she has a seizure disorder which caused one or two seizures each month. She felt no adjustments were made to make her job easier. Ms Wragg and her legal counsel failed to provide evidence of her disability from a doctor and the judge said that the case had not been well prepared. Ms Wragg also spoke of wanting to take driving lessons, something she should not be able to do if she had regular seizures. She was ordered to pay £1500 in costs. Last year, the government dropped the feed-in-tariff (the money given for energy produced by solar panels and sold to the national grid) from 43p to 21p without completing the required consultation. The move was deemed as unlawful in the courts and the reduction was delayed until April of this year. The resulting uncertainty in the market saw the closure of a number of installation companies and affected profits in others. Three companies are now asking for compensation after they say that the public supports solar panels, but the government actions have had a detrimental effect. The government has been given two weeks to respond to the request before the matter will head to the courts. Many customers reported a loss of signal for a period of around one day last week and some had only a 2G signal for several days. All services are now fixed and almost all customers should now have a full service. Many customers have stated that they expect compensation due to the inconvenience of being without their phones and this week, O2 has hinted that compensation may be possible. They have said in a blog post that they want to restore customer confidence and trust and will be doing everything hey can to make it up to them. It is thought that customers may receive a bonus of free apps or credit in a similar way to how the customers of RIM were compensated last year. The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that they have been in talks to discuss compensation as many of the troops have been called in at short notice and have had to cancel honeymoons and holidays. Many have also recently returned from Afghanistan. The soldiers have been called in after it was discovered just two weeks before the games begin that the security company in charge of security staff has failed to train enough people to meet the need. The MoD have said that the soldiers will not be left out of pocket and they may be able to claim on their own insurance for lost holidays. They point out that short notice deployment happens often and so insurance is wise. It has been suggested that the soldiers should receive the operational allowance of £29 a day which is what they would get while on duty in Afghanistan. It has also been stated that security company G4S should pay for it. G4S have agreed to pay the cost of the extra security.
