The Cost of Maternity Ward Mistakes [16th Aug 2012]
It has been revealed that Ipswich Hospital paid out close to £4.5 million in compensation cases for blunders on the maternity ward. The claims have been settled by the NHS Litigation Authority on behalf of the trust and result from cases where the baby has died, suffered brain damage or the mother has been injured due to mistakes during the labour or birth. A spokeswoman from the hospital has pointed out that the large amounts of money being paid reflect the fact that it is very costly to care for a child from birth to death when they are severely injured. The compensation paid out was 167% more than in the previous year and The Patients Association has said that money needs to be spent on improving care rather than paying for mistakes made. Hospitals in the UK pay a set amount of money to the NHSLA to cover them for litigation costs and this amount paid for maternity issues has doubled in the last year. Richard Allen Swift shouted a Nazi slogan and performed the Nazi salute in a supermarket in Chepstow on July 23. He was asked to leave the Lidl store by an Indian member of staff who was told to go back to her country and was sworn at. The woman alerted her manager who was also subjected to racial abuse. Swift claimed that he was not racist and agreed he had argued with the staff members but had not abused them. However it was found he had four previous convictions for public disorder. His defence claimed that he has schizophrenia and that this behaviour was a result of that illness. He was asked to pay each victim £50 plus court costs. The government is looking into selling cigarettes in plain packaging to prevent young people buying them and becoming addicted. However the tobacco company Philip Morris has suggested that the plans violate international laws and they could sue for compensation. The firm has submitted their argument to the consultation and say that the plan removes their intellectual property rights and that similar legal challenges have been made in Australia which is the only country to go ahead with the idea. Philip Morris suggest that the bill to the government could run into the billions. Tobacco companies also say that the idea will simply lead to more smuggling of cigarettes in to the UK. Philip Morris say that plain packaging will not achieve the aims which the government is hoping for and it is an attack on trademarks which violates national and international laws. The government say they are considering all options before making a decision. Related Stories: Plain cigarette pack plans attacked - news.uk.msn.com |
