UK Paying Compensation Around the World - (The Daily Mail must be drooling over such stories!) [25th Jul 2011]
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed this week that it has paid £100,000 in compensation to the family of a teenager in Iraq who died of drowning near Basra while in the custody of UK troops. It was found that the boy was forced into the water at gunpoint by British soldiers. The MoD have said that the decision to pay compensation was based on whether they had a legal liability to do so and in this case they did. A lawyer for the family has commented that the money will help the family to rebuild their lives. The soldiers involved have argued that it was common practise to "wet" young Iraqi's who were suspected to petty crimes. However the MoD have denied this happens. A UK mining company has agreed to pay compensation to 33 farmers in Peru who say they were beaten by police and that the company Monterrico Metal was aware it was happening. The mining company have denied this happened and have settled out of court without admitting liability. The farmers say they were attacked by the police and held captive after they marched against the mine. One protester was even shot and died, while women were sexually assaulted in the attack. Monterrico Metals was due to attend a High Court hearing with 80 witnesses. The witnesses have now agreed to say nothing more on the matter. The lawyers for the farmers have said that this sends a sign to multinationals who operate in other countries that locals should be allowed justice. A group of MPs has called for energy companies to be held accountable for the mis-selling of gas and electricity on the doorsteps of homeowners and be forced to pay compensation. The Energy and Climate Change Committee have suggested that consumers are being forced to pay too much for their energy and that the problem of mis-selling on doorsteps should have been dealt with years ago. In fact MPs have heard that up to 40% of those who switch in these circumstances failed to get a better deal. It was also found that people were targeted based on their age and incomes. The Chairman of the committee Tim Yeo has said that consumers are being urged to switch even when it is not in their interests. It is thought that confusing tariffs and energy companies which have very similar offers and deals are making it difficult for consumers to make good choices. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, or Wills and Kate as they are better known, have been offered compensation after the entertainment equipment on their 10 hour flight from North America failed. A spokesperson from BA has commented that the usual compensation offered to customers if this happens is around £200 in vouchers. This could be used to buy items at duty free or put towards BA flights. It was found that the fault was identified before the flight but could not be fixed. A lorry driver who received £1 million in compensation following a crash has been found to be lying about his injuries. Graham Loveday had said he was so injured he was forced to use a wheelchair and was chronically stressed and could not pursue his hobby of caravanning. Loveday even said he could not travel far as it was too stressful. However he was found out after he posted details of a road trip with his wife on Facebook. He posted photos which showed him enjoying his holiday. Other footage later emerged of him attaching his caravan to his car. He has now been jailed for nine months and his wife has received a 6 month suspended sentence. While it was agreed that Loveday suffered with back pain and sometimes had to use a stick, he was far from housebound. |
