Weight Loss Drug Acomplia Linked to Depression and Suicide [22nd Aug 2011]
Patients who were prescribed a drug for weight loss are taking legal action after it turned out the drug led to them becoming suicidal and depressed. The drug, Acomplia was taken off the market two years ago after claims it caused psychiatric conditions. In fact, at least one person committed suicide while on the drug and 1300 people reported side effects. Some of these people had to leave their jobs because of crippling depression. It is thought that the compensation being sought is £300,000 and the manufacturer has refused to settle out of court. Warnings of the risk of depression were included on the label in the UK and internationally there have been five suicides associated with it. It has emerged that many of the big banks look likely to miss their deadlines for settling Payment Protection Insurance compensation claims. Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds and RBS have all been given until the end of this month to settle the miss-selling issue, but it appears that many customers have not seen any money or know what compensation they are likely to receive. In some cases people have been sent notices which show their claim has been accepted, but with no further details. The banks are claiming that their customers will be acknowledged before the deadline. The compensation has been worked out to be the full premiums plus 8% for interest. It is also likely that those who took their case to the Financial Ombudsman will have to wait. 87,000 claims were put on hold pending the outcome of the court battle with the banks. Margaret Cole from the Financial Services Authority has said that they will be monitoring progress to ensure complaints are dealt with as soon as possible. Banks have pointed out that they are receiving huge numbers of new claims which are adding to the old ones they already had. A family from Ashton has been awarded more than £10,000 in compensation after they were struck down with food poisoning while on holiday at a resort in Turkey. Deborah Brennand and her son were on the holiday when the 12 year old was hit by salmonella poisoning which led to him having several weeks off school with severe vomiting, diarrhoea and even convulsions. Deborah was also ill. 20 other holidaymakers have complained of becoming ill after holidays at the same resort around the same time. The law firm dealing with the cases has said that their clients had complained about the food preparation and reported food that was undercooked and infested with flies and mosquitoes. They say that the holiday company which booked the resort has taken too long to get to grips with the issue. It has emerged that actress Leslie Ash has settled for a large compensation payment from the News of the World over phone hacking allegations. Ash and her husband say they are also considering legal action against other newspapers. The figure is thought to be in excess of £100,000. News International have said that they are committed to reaching fair and swift settlements with the victims of phone hacking. Phone companies Tiscali and Talk Talk have been ordered to pay compensation of £3 million by Ofcom after it emerged they had been charging customers for services they had never received. 65,000 customers were affected and Ofcom launched an investigation after 1,000 people complained. Talk Talk have said that the fine is disproportionate as the fine is the largest ever imposed on a telecoms company in this country. In most cases people had been charged even after they cancelled their contracts with the company. Even after receiving a warning from Ofcom, another 3,000 were incorrectly billed once again. Ofcom have said that they have taken into account the compensation already paid to customers, but that they have the right to fine companies up to 10% of their turnover for significant breaches. |
