A former soldier has been told he cannot get compensation from the MoD despite being asked to leave the force when he lost some of his hearing. Jamie Geary was a Coldstream Guards drummer and machine gunner and found he had lost 6% of his hearing due to mortar attacks. He points out that he doesn't need to wear a hearing aid and wanted to stay in the army, however it has been confirmed that his hearing may deteriorate over time. He believes that people are being forced out of the army to save money. Geary has now found out that he cannot claim compensation because it is only given to soldiers who lose 20% or more of their hearing. Despite offering to work as a trainer or in a desk job, Geary was told he was medically unfit. He is now living on benefits and has been given a resettlement grant of £13,000. The MoD have stated that they will only pay compensation when they have a legal liability to do so.

A survey conducted by YouGov has found that most people in the UK feel that personal injury lawyers should not be able to advertise their services on television. The survey was in response to the recent comments made by the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) regarding the advertising of cosmetic surgery. 65% of those questioned did not believe that adverts featuring personal injury lawyers should be aired, this compared to four fifths who were against cigarette advertising. Also in the top five were gambling and payday loans. 63% agreed with the BAAPS that plastic surgery should not be advertised.

The withdrawal of a pet insurance policy by Halifax has led to possible compensation payments by the bank to more than 36,000 people. The pet insurance policy was sold as "life-long" and offered to pay out on long term conditions up to £1,000. The policy cost just £4.50 per month. A new policy has been put in its place which has a higher payout, but does not cover pre-existing conditions. A number of complaints have been made so far to the administrators BDL and Halifax has put aside a pot of money to offer as compensation. Customers have said that they were only told of the withdrawal from the market by Halifax just weeks before their policies were due for renewal. Marc Gardner from Consumer Action has pointed out that customers expected their pets to be covered for their conditions and many may not be able to afford new insurance. Customers have been warned that they may need to be persistent if they want a compensation payment as the fund is not being publicised.

The International Court of Justice has found that Germany cannot be held legally responsible for World War 2 atrocities. The finding came as the court agreed that Italy's Supreme Court could not rule that an Italian civilian could receive compensation for his deportation to Germany to work as a slave labourer. The world court found that the Italian ruling was in breach of Germany's long standing immunity. Experts agreed that if the court had decided in favour of the Italian courts, Germany would have been subject to compensation claims from people around the world.
