Rolls Royce Sexual Harrassment [12th Jul 2012]
A former employee of Rolls-Royce is suing the company for £135,000 after she claims to have been groped and belittled by her colleagues while working there. Orla Phelan told the employment tribunal that she was the only female in her team and two colleagues had made her life "hell". The pair were sexist and loved the macho culture at the workplace. They held lewd conversations in front of her and referred to breasts as a woman's "assets". In addition her boss excluded her from meetings, referred to her as his secretary and put his hand on her knee. The company also failed to discipline staff members when she complained. She was eventually sacked because she refused to return to work after her complaints were not taken seriously. In addition the cheque was mis-spelled. Jean-Louis Bourdon believed that he would get the cost of his bike back when the police told him that they had found the person who stole it. However he was told he would get just £25 as part of a £500 compensation which the thief was ordered to pay to 21 victims of his crimes. One year later the 23p cheque arrived. The thief had been asked to pay the £500 at £10 each fortnight as he was on benefits. Due to restrictions on how long such payments can be made, the amount each victim received reduced greatly. A spokesperson from the courts has said that he cheque was sent to Mr Bourdon in error. They point out that goods can be seized to pay compensations. Usually the courts would wait until the compensation paid has reached at least £5 before a cheque is sent. She had quit her job and sold her own home before moving in with Angus Grant, leaving her with nowhere to go once they split. Judges at the Supreme court finally decided that she should receive the increase in value which her own home would have made during their seven years together. This ruling gives extra protection to couples who live together and could open up more similar cases. Ms Gow (aged 75) is now living in sheltered accommodation having gone from a home-owner to homeless due to the split. Despite the win, the compensation is likely to be swallowed by legal fees. However Ms Gow says that she carried on because she wanted to pave the way for others in a similar situation. O2 network users were without service for around one day this week leaving people unable to make or receive calls or use the Internet on their phones. The service was up and running for some customers within one day, but others are still without the full 3G service. It is thought that the problem is related to a technical problem which meant that some numbers were failing to be recognised with the network. O2 have not yet said whether they will offer compensation to those who have been inconvenienced. This comes in a month when banking customers have also been left without a service due to technical problems.
