Overseas Surgery Results in Emergency Medical Care on Return to UK [7th Jun 2012]
A woman from Hedge End has successfully sued for compensation after one of her breast implants exploded. Alison Chapman had travelled to Tunisia for her surgery in 2009 after feeling that an enhancement would improve her self esteem issues. When she returned she felt that her breasts were uneven and she was disappointed with the results. She had a corrective procedure later that year and upon her return to the UK one of the implants exploded. She had to have emergency surgery to clean the wound to prevent infection and to have the implant removed and the scar repaired. Ms Chapman said that she hadn't made the decision to have the surgery on a whim and that she researched the clinic. However she felt her after care was lacking and that she wished she had gone to a local clinic. The removal of the benefits was the resultof strike action taken at the time and led to the blanket withdrawal of travel concessions. 30 staff who live outside of England have said that they relied on the discounted travel to commute to their jobs. Five stewards are asking for £8,000 each and an assurance that there will be no further bans. The argument of the staff is that the removal of the concessions was more detrimental to those staff who relied on them and that some staff had to spend huge amounts just to get to work while the ban was in place. They feel that there were others ways to implement a ban without disproportionately affecting some staff members. BA have said they are resisting the claims. The new rules will state that small businesses with fewer than 10 staff will be able to fire staff members without reason even when there is no fault on the part of the worker. A set compensation will be paid. The CIPD have said that there is little support for the move among small businesses and that it is actually objectionable. Mike Emmott from the CIPD has stated that there is no evidence that any positive contribution to the UK economy will come from the proposal and it could even damage growth by introducing more uncertainty and reducing employee engagement. The manufacturers organisation the EEF has agreed and say that the government needs to check to see if the move could damage employee relations. Melvyn Levi and his wife are saying that they suffered detriment after Bates commented on his radio program that Levi was like a criminal on the run and he speculated about their marriage. The compensation is being sought from Bates, the Radio station and the club. The comments related to the action that Bates was taking against Levi over money it was believed he owed to the club. Bates has been accused to having a personal vendetta against the couple and that he had even written an article about why the couple may have split. Bates has already paid a substantial sum over previous allegations of libel over other articles written about Levi and his wife. Related Stories: Bates case to be decided - web.orange.co.uk |
